Preparing for your first long climb

Simple advice for riders facing a long climb for the first time: pace, food, water, and mindset.

A long climb feels different from a short hard effort. You cannot win it in the first ten minutes, but you can make it much harder by starting too fast. The most useful skill is pacing before pride takes over.

Start easier than you think you should. Use a gear that lets you keep breathing under control. If you can still talk in short sentences, you are probably pacing well. If your legs burn early and your breathing is sharp, slow down before the climb makes the decision for you.

Drink before you feel empty. Eat a small snack before hunger becomes serious. A banana, energy bar, chiura mix, or anything simple that your stomach already knows can help. Do not test new food on a hard climb if the ride matters.

Break the climb into sections. Ride to the next bend, the next shade, the next small shop, or the next viewpoint. Long climbs become easier when your mind has smaller targets instead of one distant finish.

Most riders remember their first serious climb because it teaches them something. It teaches patience, humility, and the quiet satisfaction of reaching the top under your own effort. That feeling is worth preparing for.
